PIXEL WAVES

Ornella Gallo Art × Project Italia - Monaco Yacht Show September 2026

From the ancient tessera to the digital pixel, Pixel Waves celebrates the enduring power of making art by hand

Pixel Waves is a contemporary expression born from the dialogue between technology and the human hand.

Inspired by the movement of the sea and originally developed for the 46-metre superyacht BIG WAVE, the series transforms glass and ceramic mosaic into a language of abstract waves, where geometric order is disrupted by a fluid, controlled chaos.

The title refers to the pixel — the smallest unit of today’s digital world. Yet here, the pixel becomes physical: glass, ceramic, colour, reflection and texture, assembled piece by piece by the artist.

At a time when AI-generated images are becoming increasingly present, Pixel Waves is a reminder of the value of what technology cannot replicate in the same way: the human touch, the artist’s gesture and the individuality of the hand.

These works are not conceived as decorative or functional surfaces.

The mosaic is not simply a technique applied to an object; it is the artwork itself.

Each tessera becomes part of the artistic expression, transforming an ancient craft into a contemporary visual language.

The collaboration between Ornella Gallo Art and Project Italia brings together artistic vision, material expertise and Italian craftsmanship, giving birth to an expression that looks toward the future while remaining deeply connected to the human hand.

Pixel Waves I
2026
Glass and ceramic mosaic on panel
Unique artwork
Abstract composition exploring the tension between geometric order and the fluid movement of the wave. Gold and white tesserae establish a structured field disrupted by layered fragments of blue and turquoise glass, creating a controlled pixel-like rhythm.

Pixel Waves II
2026
Glass and ceramic mosaic on panel
Unique artwork
A study in movement, fragmentation and light. The ordered geometry of the mosaic grid is interrupted by an expressive wave constructed from irregular glass and ceramic tesserae, transforming the traditional mosaic surface into a contemporary pictorial language

Pixel Waves III
2026
Glass and ceramic mosaic on panel
Unique artwork
A composition in which the wave emerges from and breaks the architectural rhythm of the grid. The changing densities, textures and reflective qualities of the tesserae create a dynamic relationship between precision and spontaneity.

Pixel Waves IV
2026
Glass and ceramic mosaic on panel
Unique artwork
An exploration of the pixel as both digital concept and physical fragment. Individual pieces of glass and ceramic accumulate into a fluid wave, where colour, reflection and texture become integral to the artwork.

Series Note
Pixel Waves reinterprets mosaic as an autonomous artistic medium. Glass and ceramic tesserae are not treated as a decorative or functional surface, but as the fundamental elements from which the artwork is constructed.
Developed from a project originally created for the 46-metre super yacht BIG WAVE, the series brings together the visual language of the sea, the precision of geometry and the tactile presence of the human hand.
