BREAKING MOULDS
THE TITLE OF THE SHOW REFERENCES THE PASSAGE OF TIME IMBUED WITHIN THE FABRIC OF THE WORKS, AND THE GRADUAL REVEAL OF INFORMATION THROUGH ABSTRACTION.
For me, these works are significant because they were created during a time of transition in my personal life my experience of the feeling of not being constrained to a square idea or to fit into the box (canvas). IRRELEVANT AND EPHEMERAL AND UNWANTED, AND ALL OF THIS LEAVES AN IMPRINT (INTENTIONALLY OR NOT).
THE WORD ‘MOLDS’ SUGGESTS BOTH A PHYSICAL RELATIONSHIP TO THE CANVAS AND ALLUDES TO THE TEMPORAL PROCESS OF MAKING. THE BRUSHSTROKES THAT FOREVER GET PERPETUATED IN LIQUID METAL, DON'T WANT TO BE CONSTRAINED AND EXTRUDE THE CANVAS.
THE PAINTINGS WERE CREATED IN A LABORIOUS PROCESS THAT BEGINS BY COMPOSING THE WORKS MANUALLY BY HAND WITH WATERCOLOR ON GRAPH PAPER, TO TAKE INSPIRATION FROM THE MOVEMENT OF THE ARTWORK.
AFTERWARD, I PROJECT THE DESIRABLE SIZE OF THE BRUSHSTROKE ON THE FLOOR AND I START TO SPLASH WITH MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF PAINT THE LINES THAT I PREVIOUSLY CREATED IN SMALL SIZES.
After the brushstrokes are dry, they will follow several layers of other paints composites, and then metals until I am satisfied with the work.
I use pure pigments and metal and other materials to make my own mixture to paint the big movements then manually I re-working the paint or the splash of brushstroke, then work the splashes on the canvas and revels portions of it before painting and re-combine them back together again.
Resulting in bold and idiosyncratic works with stunning detail. These paintings both reveal and obscure the multidimensional aspects of canvas and the physical structure of brushstrokes.
Although appearing abstract, the works contain multiple meanings and references, private to me. These cycles are reduced to their basic forms, elegant and fluid, yet also oblique and ambiguous. Multiplicities of meaning gradually unfold alongside the viewer’s own experience with geometry, materiality, and abstraction.
